In Honor of Tethered Preaching

These day we Christians are getting truly lazy and especially not allowing Scripture to speak for itself BY ITSELF and the end result is imaginations running wild with out of context cloudiness and division because of it. (Hey Christian do you ignore HISTORY?) Who dares to STAND and be used by Christ JESUS IN YOU to call all the SAINTS together and STOP the division, schisms, denominations etc. etc. and iron sharpen iron together without prejudice? IS THIS POSSIBLE? YES IT IS FACTUALLY. We all have the same SPIRIT correct?? Those who truly DENY (Forget who you think your are, deny the person of yourSELF, deny what you think Scripture says and let HIM speak for HIMSELF by HIMSELF) themselves and truly understand that it is Christ JESUS in us who lives in us and we are dead.

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Get it? Christ alone, Scripture alone. ;)

The Bible tethers us to reality. We are not free to think and speak whatever might enter our minds or what might be pleasing to any given audience—except God.

By personal calling and Scripture, I am bound to the word of God and to the preaching of what the Bible says. There are few things that burden me more or refresh me more than saying what I see in the Bible. I love to see what God says in the Bible. I love to savor it. And I love to say it.

I believe with all my heart that this is the way God has appointed for me not to waste my life. His word is true. The Bible is the only completely true book in the world. It is inspired by God. Rightly understood and followed, it will lead us to everlasting joy with him. There is no greater book or greater truth.

The implications of this for preaching are immense. John Calvin, with the other Reformers, rescued the Scriptures from their subordination to tradition in the medieval church. The Reformation, let us thank God, was the recovery of the unique and supreme authority of Scripture over church authority.

Commenting on John 17:20, Calvin wrote,

Woe to the Papists who have no other rule of faith than the tradition of the Church. As for us, let us remember that the Son of God, who alone can and ought to pronounce in this matter, approves of no other faith but that which comes from the doctrine of the Apostles, of which we find no certain testimony except in their writings. (Commentary on John)

Calvin’s preaching inspires me to press on with this great and glorious task of heralding the word of God. I feel what he says when he writes to Cardinal Sadoleto:

O Lord, you have enlightened me with the brightness of your Spirit. You have put your Word as a lamp to my feet. The clouds which before now veiled your glory have been dispelled by it, and the blessings of your Anointed have shone clearly upon my eyes. What I have learnt from your mouth (that is to say, from your Word) I will distribute faithfully to your church. (“Letter to Cardinal Jacopo Sadoleto,” quoted in J. H. Merle D’Augigne, Let Christ Be Magnified, Banner of Truth, 2007, p. 13).

For Calvin, preaching was tethered to the Bible. That is why he preached through books of the Bible so relentlessly. In honor of tethered preaching, I would like to suggest the difference I hear between preaching tethered to the word of God and preaching that ranges free and leans toward entertainment.

The difference between an entertainment-oriented preacher and a Bible-oriented preacher is the manifest connection of the preacher’s words to the Bible as what authorizes what he says.

The entertainment-oriented preacher gives the impression that he is not tethered to an authoritative book in what he says. What he says doesn’t seem to be shaped and constrained by an authority outside himself. He gives the impression that what he says has significance for reasons other than that it manifestly expresses the meaning and significance of the Bible. So he seems untethered to objective authority.

The entertainment-oriented preacher seems to be at ease talking about many things that are not drawn out of the Bible. In his message, he seems to enjoy more talking about other things than what the Bible teaches. His words seem to have a self-standing worth as interesting or fun. They are entertaining. But they don’t give the impression that this man stands as the representative of God before God’s people to deliver God’s message.

The Bible-oriented preacher, on the other hand, does see himself that way—“I am God’s representative sent to God’s people to deliver a message from God.” He knows that the only way a man can dare to assume such a position is with a trembling sense of unworthy servanthood under the authority of the Bible. He knows that the only way he can deliver God’s message to God’s people is by rooting it in and saturating it with God’s own revelation in the Bible.

The Bible-oriented preacher wants the congregation to know that his words, if they have any abiding worth, are in accord with God’s words. He wants this to be obvious to them. That is part of his humility and his authority. Therefore, he constantly tries to show the people that his ideas are coming from the Bible. He is hesitant to go too far toward points that are not demonstrable from the Bible.

His stories and illustrations are constrained and reined in by his hesitancy to lead the consciousness of his hearers away from the sense that this message is based on and expressive of what the Bible says. A sense of submission to the Bible and a sense that the Bible alone has words of true and lasting significance for our people mark the Bible-oriented preacher, but not the entertainment-oriented preacher.

People leave the preaching of the Bible-oriented preacher with a sense that the Bible is supremely authoritative and important and wonderfully good news. They feel less entertained than struck at the greatness of God and the weighty power of his word.

Lord, tether us to your mighty word. Cause me and all preachers to show the people that our word is powerless and insignificant in comparison with yours. Grant us to stand before our people as messengers sent with God’s message to God’s people in God’s name by God’s Spirit. Grant us to tremble at this responsibility. Protect us from trifling with this holy moment before your people.

This day isn’t important.

There are far more significant days in the year:

• Labor Day, when we pretend to care about other people’s jobs while frolicking at the beach.

• Election Day, when we pretend we’re making a difference by voting.

• Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Susan B. Anthony Day, when we pretend to be politically correct.

• Memorial Day, when we pretend that we live in a free country because of all the people who were killed in the government’s senseless wars.

• Flag Day, when we pretend the government is America.

• Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day, when we pretended that World War I made the world safe for democracy).

• National Teachers Day, when we pretend our children are getting an education.

• Earth Day, when we pretend that making the government more powerful will make the environment cleaner.

• United Nations Day, when we pretend to believe all those inane statements about world peace.

Today doesn’t seem to come anywhere near those days in importance.

You see, today is supposed to be Constitution Day. And no one really cares about the Constitution anymore.

What It Was

The Constitution was supposed to spell out what government can do and what it can’t do. The government’s few legal functions are listed in Article 1, Section 8. It was a revolutionary document, in that no government in history had ever had its duties and restrictions so carefully defined.

Despite frequent violations of the Constitution by the government, the document did its job reasonably well for the first hundred years — making America the freest country in history.

As late as 1887, when Congress passed a bill providing federal relief to drought-stricken Texas farmers, Grover Cleveland vetoed it, saying, "I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution."

But that was about the last gasp for limited, Constitutional government. Because the Constitution wasn’t self-enforcing, it depended on the good intentions of politicians — something Thomas Jefferson specifically warned against in 1798 when he said, "In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."

Michael Cloud put it more succinctly in recent years: "The problem isn’t the abuse of power, it’s the power to abuse." So long as the politicians have the power, they’ll abuse it. And the Constitution was intended to prevent the politicians from getting the power to abuse.

The Transformation

But by the end of the 1800s, too many Americans had lost their fear of government and politicians. The introduction of government schools had made it almost certain that most children would never learn the importance of binding down government with the chains of the Constitution.

And so government was transformed in the public mind from a necessary-but-dangerous evil into "the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else," as Frédéric Bastiat described it.

More and more, the Constitution became a political toy, to be tossed about, invoked, ignored, or misrepresented — whatever suited a given politician’s agenda at any given moment.

The income tax amendment in 1913 hammered the final nail into the coffin of limited, constitutional government. Now the politicians had not only the authority, but also the unlimited revenue, to do whatever they wanted. It seems very, very unlikely, for example, that Americans would have been dragged into World War I if the government hadn’t had the unlimited revenue to finance it.

Even the Bill of Rights — which eliminates all ambiguity by spelling out specific things the government may not do — was relegated to second place behind the needs of politicians. By the first World War, the Supreme Court had decided that the words "Congress shall make no law . . . " don’t really mean that "Congress shall make no law . . . " They mean only that the government must have a "compelling interest" in doing something. Not surprisingly, the government employees on the Court almost always decide that the government does have a compelling interest.

Where Do We Go from Here?

Those conservatives who still care about the Constitution say that it should be taught in the schools. As though government employees will emphasize the original purpose of the Constitution in restraining government. Instead, they’ll give snap quizes on such weighty questions as "How many years in a Senator’s term?" or "Who appoints the Supreme Court justices?"

If the American people are to learn the importance of limited, Constitutional government, we have to teach them ourselves.

But people aren’t interested in academic lectures on constitutional government. They’re far more interested in their own lives — and rightly so.

That’s why repealing the federal income tax is our best tool. We can offer them the reward of never paying income tax again in exchange for giving up any unconstitutional federal programs.

The next time you want someone to understand the importance of the Constitution, try approaching him this way . . .

If we repeal the federal income tax and yours is an average American family, you’ll have at least $10,000 a year more to spend or invest. What will you do with that money?

• Will you put your children in a private school, where they can get whatever kind of education you want for them?

• Will you help your favorite cause or charity in a way you’ve never been able to do before?

• Will you start that business you’ve always wanted, plan a better retirement, send your children to college?

All you have to do in return is to restrict the government to the Constitution — giving up whatever pittance unconstitutional government provides to you personally.

If you try this, you may be surprised to find that the Constitution isn’t such a hard sell after all.

And maybe someday Constitution Day will mean something again.

Introduction: Before everyone thinks I am a terrible, prejudiced, horrible person, just wanted to send a copy of the letter I sent to the Times editors and Bill O'Reilly. Please pray that Hurricane Ike will NOT come to Louisiana - I don't think I have the attitude of Christ yet!

Dear Editor,
I am a nurse who has just completed volunteer working approximately 120 hours as the clinic director in a Hurricane Gustav evacuation shelter in Shreveport, Louisiana over the last 7 days. I would love to see someone look at the evacuee situation from a new perspective. Local and national news channels have covered the evacuation and "horrible" conditions the evacuees had to endure during Hurricane Gustav.
True - some things were not optimal for the evacuation and the shelters need some modification.
At any point, does anyone address the responsibility (or irresponsibility) of the evacuees?
Does it seem wrong that one would remember their cell phone, charger, cigarettes and lighter but forget their child's insulin?
Is something amiss when an evacuee gets off the bus, walks immediately to the medical area, and requests immediate free refills on all medicines for which they cannot provide a prescription or current bottle (most of which are narcotics)?
Isn't the system flawed when an evacuee says they cannot afford a $3 co pay for a refill that will be delivered to them in the shelter yet they can take a city-provided bus to Wal-mart, buy 5 bottles of Vodka, and return to consume them secretly in the shelter?
Is it fair to stop performing luggage checks on incoming evacuees so as not to delay the registration process but endanger the volunteer staff and other persons with the very realistic truth of drugs, alcohol and weapons being brought into the shelter?
Am I less than compassionate when it frustrates me to scrub emesis from the floor near a nauseated child while his mother lies nearby, watching me work 26 hours straight, not even raising her head from the pillow to comfort her own son?
Why does it insense me to hear a man say "I ain't goin' home 'til I get my FEMA check" when I would love to just go home and see my daughters who I have only seen 3 times this week?
Is the system flawed when the privately insured patient must find a way to get to the pharmacy, fill his prescription and pay his co pay while the FEMA declaration allows the uninsured person to acquire free medications under the disaster rules?
Does it seem odd that the nurse volunteering at the shelter is paying for childcare while the evacuee sits on a cot during the day as the shelter provides a "daycare"?
Have government entitlements created this mentality and am I facilitating it with my work?
Will I be a bad person, merciless nurse or poor Christian if I hesitate to work at the next shelter because I have worked for 7 days being called every curse word imaginable, feeling threatened and fearing for my personal safety in the shelter?

Media Bias, what a concept. I can remember how in my BC days how the bondage of sin I was a slave too in my condemned flesh that kept me dead had all kinds of personalities it seemed. Take for instance getting what I want to channel SELF and its needs. I used all kinds of manipulations, distortions of truth to get what I wanted. Most of it was harmless of course but it was still basically lying to get my way so I can fulfill the lust of the Flesh and its sinful nature I was dead in. It comes in all forms from the ghettos to the ultimate luxuries of those who have it all now. I was only looking out for number one, me. It was all about me. How dead and destructive is that dreaded mindset and heart of stone that vicious continuous lifestyle that only leads to destruction we continue on without Christ JESUS in our lives.

Just like the days of Noah and Sodom and Gomorrah, today we have all kinds of wealthy powerful persons trying to do everything they can to control the world so it can do all kinds of evils, allowing immorality as a whole to rule the World. They even get to the point on politics so they can have their premarital sex, same sex marriages, kill the unborn, (YES KILL) silence GODs Righteous, tyrannize Freedom, etc. even to create war to get it. Most of the World and National MEDIA is a big fat lying JOKE. How sinful they become without any shred of repentance for their Immorally BIASED reporting. Once again PROVING THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD.

Once again here we are in the worst Presidential Campaign ever in history beyond of course the MEDIA BIAS not letting every AMERICAN POLITICAL party have their EQUAL SAY with EQUAL COVERAGE, And at least one candidate Sarah Palin shows a moral promise besides Ron Paul who I think has most of the right ideas but of Course the BOUGHT BY BILLIONAIRES (foreign or domestic), Corporations, and Immoral Special interests MEDIA Networks only reported what it seems they were told to report leaving all kinds of real truth out because immorality must rule and human control seems to be the norm these days as Societies grow more ungodly each minute, even trying to exempt the Ten Commandments when they will never be able to rid themselves of GOD statues because it is part of the human makeup and molded into us by HIS WORD.

Oh how GOD in Christ JESUS first, Apostles second, OT Prophets third, Saints and old Saints fourth etc etc, and for America OUR FOUNDING FATHERS, they ALL warned of such wicked monstrosities that will happen to a free moral society. What a disgrace. All those who remain practicing such ungodliness should be ashamed of themselves NOW and it is so sad they will have to face a RIGHTEOUS Vengeful GOD who brings forth justice on those who HATE HIM and EVERY KNEE WILL BOW.

COMMENTARY:
AGAIN, I am sounding off against the sheer stupidity of those who remain in bondage to the sin of PERVERSION who continue to force their sinful agendas because they truly are without excuse and as JESUS said, "they no not what they do". Ah what common Grace from the excellency JESUS has for those who hate HIM and try to pervert HIS words to suit themselves which is truly taking HIS name in vain which is a TRUE hate crime.
But it is so disturbing because of those who are in bondage to this perversion have a false misunderstanding of what liberty truly means in a moral sense which is in all makeup of the human being;

Rom 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption(homosexuality,premarital sex, all sexual immoralities, and all sin) into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

It is very sad this group of humans would consider God's very restoring Word a Hate Crime because GOD does not approve of what they are indulging in factually. Science also proves this clearly with out a shadow of a doubt. And to the more factual side there is no such thing as a "gay gene" science also proves so fortunately.
They use the excuse that God created them that way which a perfect GOD would never do.
They are without excuse.

But on and on this agenda continues to desperately infiltrate our morally created and founded society with forces of desperation proving the Psalmist verse a trillion fold;

Jer 17:9 The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?

It seems they think they can truly win legally their right with deception to enforce unnatural acts which is the same pride that Lucifer had that brought him to his destruction. They will go down with him and forever they will remain separated from the God who gave them breath. Just imagine not even having that image of God anymore or actually being separated where HE does not protect you forever as the Word says there will be "weeping and gnashing of teeth" and their smoke rises up forever.
We human cannot even imagine that now. That means no more common grace from HIM that all humans share alike. We humans cannot even conceive of ever being separated from God our Creator who is Christ JESUS who LOVED US FIRST. An infinity of chances while yet we are still breathing to repent and be transformed to be forever satisfied.
So sad some would rather choose the temporary sewers of the World over the Eternal Joy headed for those who are faithful because of His gift of Salvation that belongs to Him alone and is a free gift for all who HE chooses. IF this is you and you are reading this here is your chance NOW.

But I call it what it is friend, Perversion plain and simple. You are labeled a PERVERT if you sin against GOD in a sexually immoral lifestyle or a sinful lifestyle for that matter and it is a HATE CRIME if you continue to sin against HIM the one who created you and loved you first.

Oh Please lost one in your sin, come to the saving wonderful Grace of the excellency of Christ JESUS who calls you this moment from the beginning of time to come unto HIM those who are labored in sin are are in bondage to sin and are dead. HE will heal you and restore you back to life. You will actually be alive spiritually as well as physically. But if you reject, you will be swallowed with the well deserved World that will be punished by a righteous GOD who must punish sin. And if you be transformed by the Free Gift JESUS has to offer you NOW, and be renewed in your human mind afresh with the sustaining power of eternity by the Holy Spirit, You will be satisfied 100% and forever. Legal crackdown on biblical condemnation of homosexuality feared?

A federal "hate crimes" plan to criminalize speech or thoughts critical of homosexuality – dropped from Congress' agenda earlier because of a veto threat from President Bush – may be resurrected before the election, according to an opponent of such advocacy laws . . . Canada already has an aggressive "hate crimes" law, and there authorities there have gone so far as to tell a Christian pastor he must recant his faith because of the legislation that bans statements that can be "perceived" as condemning another person.

Another step downward in the freakification of America:

Four "gender-neutral" bathrooms have been added to the University of Vermont's student center — at a cost of $2,500 apiece. Each has a sign on the wall identifying it as a "gender neutral restroom."

Squeaks Annie Stevens, assistant vice president for student and campus life:

It's about inclusivity and accessibility and the importance of meeting all people's needs, not just a few.

A "transgendered" student calling himself Kelly adds:

Just because there can be tense situations in gendered bathrooms, especially for trans-identified people, you need a space to use the restroom and feel safe and comfortable.

The point isn't just to flush $10,000 down the toilet. It's to put the official stamp of society's approval on the practice of men walking around in women's clothes, sometimes even having themselves surgically mutilated to enhance their morbidly narcissistic fantasies.

At least this might keep these freakazoids from barging into the ladies' room.

Vermont also offers "gender-neutral residential suites," making it more convenient for perverts to hook up with each other.

But it's still not enough, according to Dot Brauer, director of the university's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Ally Services, who is demanding more special bathrooms, as well as private showers in the gym in case there are any cross-dressing athletes.
